Analysis and information

## What moved

- **Closing levels on 30 October** (Yahoo Finance, against 29 October): the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.9% to 25,437, the S&P 500 fell 1.8% to 7,580, the Dow fell 1.1% to 51,770 and the Russell 2000 fell 1.7% to 2,812. The VIX rose to 19.73 from 17.20.
- **Where it hit:** technology fell hardest. Money moved toward healthcare, consumer staples, utilities and energy, and toward Treasuries. Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers described that on the day as rotation "rather than just selling everything".
- **Crypto:** bitcoin traded near $77,350 after an overnight low of $76,400, after Binance said about $6.3B of client assets were affected by a hack (CoinDesk).

## Why

- **Weak guidance.** Intel guided Q4 revenue to $15.0-16.0B and non-GAAP EPS to $0.25 (2026-10-29). Its CFO said the PC slowdown continues "at least through the first half of next year".
- **The AI spending bill is large, and it now shows in cash flow.** Amazon spent $77.3B on property and equipment in Q3, up from $35.1B a year earlier, and kept its 2026 plan near $220B. Alphabet spent $51.4B, and its Q3 free cash flow was negative $9.1B.
- **Not every result was weak.** Sandisk reported $11.0B of revenue and guided higher, and announced an 8-for-1 split that trades from 2026-11-20.
- **Inflation ran hot.** September PCE prices rose 0.5% in the month and 3.6% over the year; core rose 3.1% over the year (BEA, 2026-10-29). The Fed kept rates at 3.75-4% on 2026-10-28, but two members voted to hike. St. Louis Fed President Musalem said on 10-30 that more tightening will be needed "soon".

## Is the stress spreading?

This site's gauges ask whether a selloff is reaching the parts of the economy that borrow and hire.
- **Credit: not yet, as far as the data shows.** The high-yield and investment-grade bond spreads both read calm, but **as of 28 October, before this move**. Monday's readings are the real test. The pressure is concentrated in AI infrastructure debt: CoreWeave's 2031 bonds yielded about 15.8% in mid-October, a distressed level for one issuer, not a market-wide break.
- **Jobs: calm.** Continuing jobless claims fell to 1,701,000 and the four-week average of new claims is 196,750.
- **Rates: they fell on the day.** The 10-year Treasury yield closed at 4.94%, down from 5.05% on 28 October (US Treasury daily par yield curve). When stress reaches credit, risky-debt yields usually rise while Treasury yields fall; so far only the Treasury half has shown up.
- **Tech volatility: elevated.** Options price more volatility for big tech than for the broad market than usual. On 29 October the Nasdaq-100 volatility index (VXN) was 146% of the VIX, by our calculation from FRED data. That is above its five-year 90th percentile (139) but below its 97th (153).

The evidence today fits a repricing of tech and AI spending, with markets rotating rather than liquidating. It does not yet show stress in credit or jobs.

## What would change this read

- The high-yield spread widening toward its 4% watch line.
- Continuing jobless claims turning up for several weeks.
- VXN rising above about 153% of the VIX, its five-year 97th percentile.
- Distress spreading from AI infrastructure debt to other high-yield issuers.

Corrected 31 October: two index values the site is not licensed to publish were removed.
